Martin 16 Sloop: Sophisticated Design

The Martin 16 is an advanced and sophisticated design. She was designed using the same AUTOSHIP Computer-Aided Design programs used for America’s Cup winners. The Martin 16 features design innovations that make her unique in her field:

  • Easily-driven, narrow, long hull for performance and control.
  • Dry and comfortable due to the high freeboard and forward helmseat with spray-deck and special spray-damping flange.
  • Stability is provided by a computer-designed lead ballast pod at the tip of a deep, high-performance lifting keel foil.
  • The cockpit features an adjustable, ergonomically designed helm seat forward, with a second seat aft to accommodate a passenger, instructor or crew helmsman when sailing double-handed.
  • A unique “joystick” controls the responsive, transom-hung rudder.  The joystick can be located in either the front seat or rear seat, when sailing double-handed.
  • Optimum control with minimum sheet load is obtained with “vang-sheeting” for both mainsail and boomed jib. The main sheet and jib sheet are led to a double cam cleat directly in front of the helmsperson.
  • Sail controls are led to consoles within easy reach of the helmsperson.
  • Unsinkable — designed with 1100 lbs. of foam flotation, the Martin 16 is unsinkable — even with the hull totally flooded!

A versatile trainer

The Martin is the perfect trailer-launched daysailer. With a deep ballasted keel and simple control systems, the Martin 16 is a safe daysailer for sailors of all abilities. The high-efficiency lifting keel system makes trailer launching simple from any ramp. No need for a large crew—the Martin can be rigged by one person and sailing in minutes!

The sophisticated design of the Martin 16 makes it an ideal boat for both novice and advanced sailors. Novices can easily handle the moderate sailplan while advanced sailors find the Martin’s easily driven hull to be a quick performer under all conditions. A second seat accommodates an instructor or passenger. The Martin 16 is ideal for club programs.

One-Design Racer

The Martin 16 is a high-performance sloop and its one-design status makes it an ideal club racer and challenging single-hander for the most experienced sailor. The Martin 16 transforms single-handed racing from a physical battle to a waterborne “chess game” for sailors of any age, with any level of physical ability.

There are growing fleets of Martin 16s around the globe. Check out the Martin 16 Class Association for information about Martin 16 “action” in your area.

Single-handed
or Double-handed

The versatile double-handed sailing format allows the helm to be in the front or rear seat.  When sailing double-handed, the 16 turbo kit—a masthead, asymmetrical spinnaker kit - more than doubles the standard Martin 16 sail area. The M16 turbo kit adds power to your Martin 16 for sailing off the wind, especially in light to medium winds. The spinnaker pushes the boat to hull speed in as little as an 8-knot breeze, and introduces the excitement and tactical trade-offs of gybing downwind.
